Mexican Redknee Tarantulas

Many species of tarantula exist across the world. Although tarantulas generally display the same basic characteristics and behaviors, some species stand out as the exception to the rule. Whether it is that a certain species makes uncommon tarantula noises or experience color reversal during growth, some tarantulas are just more intriguing than others. One of the most sought after species for a pet is the Mexican red tarantula, more commonly known as the Mexican redknee tarantula.

The Mexican redknee got its name from both its origin and its physical characteristics. This species is native to areas of Mexico and Central America. It is currently a protected species in its natural habitat, because it is threatened with extinction. As a result, a special permit is required to transfer the Mexican redknee from its natural habitat to other countries. Although it is a highly sought after species, it is not always available due to its protected status.

This tarantula boasts one of the most gorgeous color schemes amongst all tarantulas. It body is mostly dark brown, while its legs have beautiful orange patches. The redknee's colors intensify after continued molting, resulting in an almost black body with vibrant red patches to replace the previous orange patches on the legs. This species is definitely the onlooker's tarantula!

Mexican redknee tarantulas are terrestrial by nature, but are surprisingly not too fond of burrowing. Certainly, the conditions in its aquarium or tank should be the same as for any other terrestrial species, but the redknee would feel more comfortable hiding in a manmade burrow like a flower pot that is already half buried in the substrate.

Apart from its striking color scheme, redknee tarantulas are also popular amongst hobbyists because of its extremely docile nature. This is probably one of the most submissive and passive tarantulas you will ever come across, which would definitely make them more appealing to first time tarantula owners.

Female redknee tarantulas can live up to 25 years or more. The males have a much shorter life span, which is a common occurrence with most tarantula species. The mature female grows to about 4 inches with a 6 to 7 inch leg span, making them quite petite and easy to house.

People often make the mistake of assuming that Mexican redknee tarantulas originate in dry habitats because that is the typical nature of tarantulas. However, this species actually comes from the mountainous areas of Mexico, making it necessary for the humidity in their naturalistic environment to be about 60%. That is certainly a lot less than the ideal climate conditions for other tarantula species.

If you are looking for a tarantula with a wide and varied life story, the Mexican redknee is the ideal one for you. Not only is it a sight for sore eyes, but it also makes an excellent conversation piece that can leave listeners engaged for a very long time.
